This simple RS232 Optical Isolator device will help protect your PC and CNC and eliminate signal noise over longer lengths of cable. It can help alert you to shorts in the cables, improper grounding causing voltage present on ground and other failures. We have also found that this helps eliminate induced noise due to poor shielding of the cable wires and prevents false triggering and false return data.
Many times where you touch the ground or housing shield to the machine, you can see a small spark as you plug in the cable. Most RS232 circuit boards fail when a thunder/lightning storm goes through or when a company has power surges. When it comes to CNC RS232 ports they generally come from the motherboard and the only way to fix it is to replace the motherboard. This is not a cheap fix. This RS232 isolator device may help you avoid some of these failures when they occur, but like everything out there, there is no guarantee.

Normally RS232 damages are hardware damages of communication devices, mostly caused by non-grounding at both ends, various surges, lightning induction, static interference, hot plug, electromagnetic interference, etc.
This photoelectric isolator can tolerate peak voltage margins of transient 2,500 Vrms or 500vdc on a continuous base and at the same time it is able to absorb static and electromagnetic interference for protection of the devices.
The electric and ground loop between the two ends of RS232 devices are completely blocked by the advanced isolation technology. Therefore the electrical signal from one end has been turned into an optical signal for transmission to the other end, and the optical received from the other end will be converted back into an electrical signal again. In this way the communication devices are well protected from the interference and damages possibly caused by power grounding loop surge, so that obvious improvement of the reliability and stability of the communication system are achieved.
Common uses include point to point RS232, monitor control systems, program control exchanger charging terminals, satellite receiver and ATM auto teller machines.
