Retention Knob for Drawbar Force Gauges

We recommend using the retention knob from the exact machine you are working with. Either remove from a existing toolholder or keep a spare new one for that machine for quality control.

Why We Do Not Supply Retention Knobs with Spindle Drawbar Testers

For the safest and most accurate spindle drawbar testing, we strongly recommend using the retention knob that is currently being used in the machine. This can be obtained by removing the retention knob from an existing toolholder or by keeping a dedicated spare retention knob for quality control and testing purposes. There are numerous spindle taper styles, drawbar designs, and retention knob standards in use today, including many machine-specific variations. Because of these differences, it is difficult for us to determine and supply the correct retention knob for every application

Using an incorrect retention knob can have serious consequences. Even small differences in dimensions, contact angles, or geometry may prevent proper engagement with the drawbar. If the drawbar attempts to clamp an incompatible retention knob, it can:

  • Lock the toolholder in the spindle
  • Damage the drawbar gripper fingers
  • Cause premature wear to the spindle retention system
  • Result in costly repairs, potentially exceeding $10,000 for spindle or drawbar replacement

Why We Recommend Using Your Machine’s Existing Retention Knob

  • Operators with limited spindle or tooling experience may unknowingly select the wrong retention knob from a supplied kit.
  • Many retention knobs appear similar, but critical differences in dimensions and geometry may not be obvious.
  • Using a retention knob already proven to work in the machine eliminates guesswork and reduces the risk of damage.
  • Testing with the machine's actual retention knob provides the most accurate representation of real-world operating conditions.

Best practice for quality control

  • We also recommend purchasing a high-quality, NAME-BRAND retention knob specifically for drawbar testing dedicated to the machine.
