Originally developed by Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation), the device net protocol was created as an application layer for industrial automation applications. This protocol connects simple industrial devices (sensors and actuators) with higher-level devices such as programmable controllers. Used as an application layer protocol on top of CAN (Controller Area Network) hardware, a robust technology was created to define an application that structures the task of configuring, accessing and controlling industrial automation devices.
